Personal Story: Maine Day 3 and 4

Day three started out with an early lunch in New Harbor.  Oh my, New Harbor is PRECIOUS.  SO tranquil... a beautiful escape.  We ate at Shaw's Wharf, per recommendation from a couple of people.  We ate on the second level deck overlooking New Harbor... the high was 70 that day, the breeze cool, the food yummy.  You have to go!   I mean, look at the view (above also):

After lunch we headed down to Permaquid Point Park to see the Permaquid Lighthouse.  This park, and the lighthouse, is GORGEOUS!  We spent several hours walking around the park, climbing the rocks and exploring inside the lighthouse.

This was one moment I was DESPERATE for someone I knew or trusted.  I saw this couple on the top of the rocks and I was dying for a picture of David and I up there.  I was not feeling like taking the risk of leaving a stranger with our equipment down on the rocks closer to the water while we climb up to get in place for this shot... we just need to start traveling with other people!

So we settled for the self timer instead...

We found a shaded spot under a tree to relax and enjoy the view... and grab some quick lovie shots of us together.

After spending the afternoon at the lighthouse, we decided to try to find Rachel Carson's salt pond on our way back through New Harbor.  Rachel Carson is a woman in US History that you need to know- she was an incredible scientist who studied human's effect on the environment, most notably her work studying how our human made chemicals effect nature.  She used this salt pond in New Harbor on the Muscongus Bay to conduct her studies which were featured in her book (one of many) The Edge of the Sea.  It was so fun to explore!  You want to try to go when the tide is out... we just happened to arrive during that time.

There are strict rules at the salt pond to keep it well preserved... you aren't supposed to remove any living thing.  I happened to find a hand full of sea glass pieces.  I had been dreaming for years of finding seas glass in New England.  I did not find the oldest blue kind, but I did feel good finding some green, brown and clear pieces at the salt pond preserve that I could clean out of the rocks for Rachel Carson :)

For dinner we headed back to Freeport to Gritty McDuff's Pub where David got to drink their summer and fall seasonal brews as we sat on their deck ("Vacationland" and "Halloween"), feeling sad that our trip was almost over.

We didn't really have a full day 4.  We needed to arrive at the airport in Portland by 11am and I just HAD to stop by one more lighthouse on our way home.... thus our trip to the Portland Head Light.  As we landed in Portland at the beginning of our trip we were welcomed to Maine with a sunset and an amazing view of this lighthouse.  You can't explore this light house like you could the others we visited, but it was still gorgeous and unique in that it was surrounded by pieces of Fort Williams.

And as we left, we got one more view of the Portland Head Light...

Thanks for sharing in our Maine trip!  Let me know if you are headed to the Maine coast and need some ideas :)
