Family Story: Clara Jean's Birth Day

ClaraJeanBlog-0001

I know that my job is important, but there are few times when I am really struck by the weight and depth of what I do...  That I am invited into people's personal and private life events so that they can experience them, fully present, then have the images I create to look back on those moments later.  The Calverts are no strangers to me and my camera - they are one of families that I have photographed the most.  You can see images of them here, here, and here.  I had the honor of welcoming their first child, Judah, into the world.  When they asked me to be there for baby #2 I was so thrilled.  David and Sarah did not know if they were having a boy or a girl so to hear their excitement and surprise over finding out they were having a girl was so awesome

When Clara Jean came into the world, it was one of those rare moments when, right then, I felt that I was in sacred space.  I felt that it was a big, huge moment.  I could reach out and touch all the raw emotions in the room.  I have always been told that I am overly sensitive to other people's feelings but honestly, I never want to stop feeling that.  That's what makes me good at my job.

Betty Jo was on hand again to coach Sarah and David through the labor process.  She is so very excellent at her job!

When I was taking these next three images, David took a moment to introduce me to Clara Jean, and then started talking about how one day I would be taking their picture as he walks her down the aisle on her wedding day.  And then we all started crying (except Clara Jean - she was super chill with the cleaning process).

Clara Jean's big brother has a much more dramatic and emotional picture getting his hair brushed.  This little lady seemed to enjoy it.

I came back later in the day to document Judah meeting his little sister for the first time.  Again, the energy in the room shifted for me and I knew I was in sacred space.  This little man was discovering this new, lifelong friend in his world and he instantly loved her.  Judah could not take his eyes off Clara Jean and just wanted to touch her.
